M.A.Zavery & Co.

Search for lifting clamp suppliers in India, and you are faced with a wall of directory listings. Most don’t tell you who makes the clamp, what standard it meets, or what else the lift requires. This guide takes a more restricted path. It lists
ten brands that M.A.Zavery & Co. has on its website and tells what each one makes so you know how to tell a clamp maker from a company that supplies the gear around the clamp.

Two points in front. First, it’s not a ranking. There is no authoritative list of lifting clamp brands, so I have ordered this list according to how close each brand is to a clamp-based lift. Second, few of those brands make clamps. The rest make the hoists, slings, links, and lifting points that every clamp lift needs too. Here’s the lowdown.

Short answer: The ten brands, categorised by their relationship to clamp lifting, are:

  • Make clamps: Camlok, Safelift, Tiger, and Tigrip (a line of Yale and Columbus McKinnon)
  • Thiele, Yoke, and Ludwig make lifting points and fittings; Yale, Stahl, Elephant, and Bridon make hoists and rope

How These Brands Were Chosen

I began with the list of brands on the M.A.Z. website: Safelift, Yoke, Thiele, Elephant, Bridon Bekaert, Maxpull, Tiger, Ludwig, and the Yale, Camlok, and Stahl lines of Columbus McKinnon (CMCO). I have kept ten that touch a clamp lift. The site also shows Maxpull winches, but I left those out because they are not related to clamping.

I used the maker’s own pages, the trade press, or the M.A.Zavery site for each brand. Different regional catalogues have different capacities, so check the product page for ratings before you buy.

Lifting Clamps Manufacturers and Suppliers in India: The 10 Brands

1. Camlok (Columbus McKinnon)

The most obvious clamp specialist on the list is Camlok. The brand’s catalogue says it dates back to 1958 and has built more than a million clamps. The scope comprises vertical and horizontal plate clamps, girder clamps, lifting lugs, screw clamps, beam clamps, and permanent lifting magnets. It’s in the Columbus McKinnon brand family with Yale and Stahl.

M.A.Zavery lists five Camlok items: TTR girder stacking clamps, THS lifting clamp, TRU round stock grabs, CR rail clamps and MR fixed multi-rail grabs. Between them, they cover girders, plates, round stock, and rails.

2. Safelift (M.A.Zavery & Co.)

Safelift is the only brand here that is from the supplier. M.A.Zavery was founded in Calcutta in 1983 and manufactures its own material handling equipment marketed under the name Safelift through a network of dealers throughout India, says M.A.Zavery. The homepage lists a category for pipe lifting clamps. Trade directory lists Safelift horizontal plate lifting clamps are made from low-carbon alloy steel. It also features Safelift hand stackers, drum trolleys and electric stackers.

This article is on M.A.Zavery’s site, so treat this entry as you would any other; ask for the data sheet, the working load limit, and the test certificate.

3. Tiger

Tiger Lifting manufactures products for hoisting, winching, clamping, and height safety. Its company profile reads that it has been manufacturing manual lifting products for over 60 years and has added to its selection of lifting clamps. Tiger’s air hoists are listed on M.A.Zavery’s homepage – the TAH52 (5 to 20 tonnes), the TAH250 (25 to 60 tonnes), a low headroom air trolley and an air monorail trolley hoist.

Air hoists do not spark, which is critical in explosion-hazard locations. A distributor listing shows the TAH52 is rated for ATEX Category 3. Tiger clamps are not on the homepage, so check with M.A.Zavery to see if they can supply them.

4. Tigrip (Yale, Columbus McKinnon)

The under-the-hook range includes clamps, grabs, and crane weighers. Tigrip is listed under the Yale name in the CMCO catalogue. Tigrip TBL+ and TCU lifting clamps can be seen on CMCO’s India page. M.A.Zavery lists the Tigrip TZL/TZR load indicator and the Tigrip TCO/TCU container item. I couldn’t confirm what is on each page, so please provide exact information for each.

5. Thiele

KG is located in Iserlohn, Germany, and produces lifting points, lashing points, chains, and shackles. The operating instructions state that the lifting points meet the requirements of EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, are CE marked, and are marked with the working load limit. They are rated for 20,000 dynamic load changes.

M.A.Zavery lists the TWN 1795, TWN 1820, the TWN 1837 automatic hook, the TWN 1827 weld-on point, the TWN 1871 shackle and the TWN 1896 lifting point. Often the answer when a clamp doesn’t fit a load is a certified lifting point.

6. Yoke

YOKE INDUSTRIAL CORP. of TAIWAN makes lifting fittings for chain, wire rope and webbing slings. Its trade profiles say its products are EN 1677 compliant. The company is ISO 9001 certified. Includes G80 and G100 accessories, shackles, hooks, lifting points, and snatch blocks.

M.A.Zavery X-001 Welded Master Link X-007 Master Link Assembly X-079 Wire Sling X-A06 G100 4-Leg Assembly Chain Sling Fittings G100 Chain Slings. These parts attach a clamp to the crane hook.

7. Ludwig

KG manufactures the LudwigHook, a remote-controlled release hook. Distributors say it allows crews to release rigging from a distance, rather than climbing up to unhook. “The opening mechanism shuts off when there is a load on it, so the load cannot drop in the middle of a lift,” said a North American distributor.

M.A.Zavery has three Ludwig pieces: Bulli, Choker and Traverse. Request data sheets. I was not able to determine what each one covers.

8. Yale (Columbus McKinnon)

Yale is based in Wuppertal, Germany. Yale is the leading European brand of standard manual hoists in the CMCO catalogue. M.A.Zavery lists the Yale Lift 360 ATEX hand chain hoist, Yale Cable King Air Wire, and Yale UNOplus Series A ratchet.

What is the importance of Yale in a clamp lift? Yale provides the hoist that the clamp hangs from.

9. Stahl (Columbus McKinnon)

STAHL CraneSystems manufactures hoists and crane components and is touted by CMCO as a global specialist in explosion-proof crane technology. M.A.Zavery has listed ST chain hoist, SH wire rope hoist, SH Ex wire rope hoist, STD dual chain hoist, and CraneKits. A clamp on a heavy girder or plate is often hung from a crane or hoist like these.

10. Elephant

Capacities from 0.5 to 10 tonnes are available for the Super 100 manual chain hoist, according to distributor data, which also lists an overload protection device, a grade 105 galvanised load chain to DIN 5684, and a double pawl, fail-safe brake.

M.A.Zavery lists the C21 Series, H-100 Series chain block, Super 100, DAG 3t hoist, YA Series lever hoist, Alpha and Beta electric series and a Trolley Series plain trolley.

Bonus: Bridon (Bekaert)

Bridon wire rope is part of Bekaert and is manufactured at sites including Doncaster in the UK. Its Dyform compacted strands add cross-sectional metal for better crushing resistance. M.A.Zavery lists Dyform 6, 8, 18, 34LR and DSC8, Tiger Blue 8, Zebra, Constructex and other grades. The clamp is often used with wire rope slings.

How to Choose a Lifting Clamp Supplier in India

Brand names are helpful, but evidence is better. Six things to check with any supplier

  • Same old. Ask if the clamp is EN 13155 or ASME B30.20 compliant.
  • The mark. The serial number, maker’s mark, and working load limit should be displayed on the body.
  • Test certificate. Ask for the certificate corresponding to your serial number. The factors used in proof testing vary with the standard, so ask what standard applies.
  • The span of jaw. Match the plate thickness, flange width, or pipe diameter to the specified range.
  • The direction. Check that the clamp is suitable for your lift direction, e.g., vertical, horizontal, or turning.
  • The service. Ask about spare parts, repair, and inspection help.

What is the brand of the clamp? A supplier may be able to sell you a brand-name clamp, but only the manufacturer or an authorised dealer can back up the paperwork.

Safe Use After You Buy

A good clamp can be ruined by misuse. Do these habits:

  • Do not exceed the rated load or orientation.
  • Check jaws, teeth, springs and locks before each use.
  • Use rated slings, shackles, and lifting points.
  • First, do a short test lift.
  • Do not let people under the load.
  • Check logs and withdraw broken clamps.

Next Steps

Now you know who makes what among the lifting clamp manufacturers on this list. So what to do next?

  • List your load’s material, weight, thickness, and direction.
  • Match each load with a clamp type, or a lifting point if a clamp is not applicable.
  • Request data sheets and test certificates from the supplier.
  • Check the ratings of the clamp and the hoist, sling, and link that go with it.
  • Test the hoist on a light load.
  • Develop an inspection routine and train the operators.

FAQs

Who makes lifting clamps among these brands?

Clamps are made by Camlok, Safelift, Tiger and Tigrip. Thiele, Yoke and Ludwig produce lifting points and fittings. Yale, Stahl, Elephant and Bridon make hoists and rope. A full clamp lift usually requires all three groups.

Is this a ranking of the best lifting clamp brands?

Nah. There is no official listing. The list covers brands on M.A.Zavery’s site and goes from the brands closest to clamp lifting to those that supply the hoists and rope. Always check the specs and certificates yourself.

What should I ask a lifting clamp supplier in India?

Ask who makes the clamp, what standard it is made to, and what the working load limit is. Ask for a test certificate for your serial number, check the jaw range, and ask about spares and inspection support.

Does M.A.Zavery make its own lifting clamps?

M.A.Zavery manufactures its own material handling equipment under the brand name Safelift, says its chairman. Pipe Lifting Clamps category on the homepage. Please check with the company for the current Safelift clamp range, ratings, and test certificates before ordering.

Can I use any hoist with a lifting clamp?

No. The hoist, sling, link and clamp shall have a rating equal or greater than the load. Check every link in the chain. Never exceed the lowest rating.
